Edmund withdraws from Argentina Open

13th February 2018, 16:36 by Neil Foster

A throat infection has forced Kyle Edmund to pull out of this week's Argentina Open.

The 23-year-old was due to return to action after injury forced him out of Great Britain's Davis Cup defeat to Spain, but he will play no part in Buenos Aires after going down with illness.

It is another setback for the South African-born ace, who was looking to build on his superb run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January.

The world number 26 had been scheduled to face Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round on Tuesday but it seems as though he will now return in next week's Rio Open.

There is an added incentive for Edmund in Brazil next week as he would overtake Andy Murray in the rankings with a march to the final and become British number one, as the Scot has not played competitively since Wimbledon due to a hip injury.
