Federer avoids Wimbledon upset

3rd July 2019, 00:17 by Michael Holland

Roger Federer survived a first-round scare against Lloyd Harris at Wimbledon and admits it took him a while to get going.

22-year-old Harris had never won a match on grass heading into the showdown, but stunned the eight-time champion when claiming the first set on Centre Court.

However Federer managed to find his form to take the next three sets and win the match 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 to set up a second-round encounter with Britain's Jay Clarke.

Federer admitted to struggling in the first set and gave credit to youngster Harris for making him sweat.

"I struggled early on. I felt a bit frozen, my legs weren't going," he told BBC Sport. "I felt it was heavy out there, the ball wasn't going when I was hitting it and he was hitting it big.

"He kept me nervous for a set and a half and I think that break was crucial in the second to turn things around. It took a big effort. Lloyd played a good match."
