Federer books another Dubai semi date

28th February 2019, 19:37 by Aidan Perkins

Roger Federer is into the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships once again after seeing off Marton Fucsovics.

The Swiss star won 7-6 6-4 against his former training partner in a rain-interrupted quarter-final as he keeps alive his hopes of a record eighth title in Dubai.

Federer will face either Borna Coric or Nikoloz Basilashvili in the last four and admitted it had been a slog getting past Fucsovics.

He said: "It’s tricky to come back and just hit winners after that [rain delays]. Sometimes it’s a disadvantage. Sometimes it was an advantage. We made the most of it.

"The tie-breaker was tough. I’m happy I found a way to get out of that one. That was an exciting match, to say the least.

"At the end of the day, I think it’s all about trying to put yourself in the best position time and time again, sort of push luck on your side. Some days you get it, some days you don’t.

"I do believe the better player wins, but not always. You have to battle hard because the margins are extremely slim in the game nowadays.

Earlier, Stefanos Tsitsipas set up a semi-final against Gael Monfils after the Greek star beat Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 6-7 6-1. Monfils had seen off qualifier Ricardas Berankis, also in three sets, 6-1 6-7 6-2.
