Federer keeping cool ahead of new year

13th January 2018, 15:01 by Craig Smithson

Roger Federer is hoping to emulate his successful 2017 season but is trying to play down the extra pressure on him.

The 36-year-old rolled back the years this past campaign as he took his Grand Slam tally to 19, courtesy of wins in the Australian Open and Wimbledon respectively, while he finished in second spot behind Rafael Nadal in the ATP world rankings.

Federer's stock has subsequently risen ahead of 2018 but the Swiss veteran is trying to remain grounded.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming Hopman Cup, which will see him again link up with compatriot Belinda Bencic for the mixed event, Federer said: "Expectations are higher now but I try to remind myself 'just don't think it's normal and realistic to aim for the same things I did this year in 2017'.

"I've got to try and keep it cool. Try my best and see what happens but the preparation's been good so far. We'll see how things go."

He added: "I had a great off-season. I mean, I did have a good-off season too last year but I just wasn't sure what to expect."
