I thought about quitting - Wawrinka

18th December 2017, 15:30 by James Mason

Stanislas Wawrinka admits being injured for so long this year caused him to think about retiring from tennis.

Wawrinka confirmed at the start of August that his season had come to a premature end due to a troublesome knee injury, meaning he was unable to defend his US Open crown.

The Swiss required an operation to resolve the issue and he has been working hard on his recovery over the past four months in order to be fit in time for the 2018 Australian Open.

He is now back in training but the three-time Grand Slam champion has revealed there were times he contemplated hanging up his racket for good.

In an interview with Le Matin, Wawrinka said: "(The thought of stopping) It was rather a general feeling. When you go through four months of inactivity, you cannot walk, you put everything in question.

"During my first workouts, I did some walking, some steps. It makes sense to doubt, to lose confidence. I think it would have been impossible for me to live all this without someone who knows me perfectly.

"Pierre knows exactly how far I can push, what I have the right to do or not. He could identify each of my limits of the moment. His presence was a lifeline."
