Kerber the star as Germany down Belgium
Angelique Kerber won both her matches as Germany beat Belgium 2-1 to kick off their Hopman Cup campaign in the perfect way.
The 29-year-old, who topped the world rankings in September 2016 but has now slipped to 21st in the world, is hoping for a resurgence this year and took care of Elise Mertens 7-6 (6) 7-6 (1) in the team contest despite having to save a match point.
Compatriot Alexander Zverev attempted to seal the contest for Germany as he faced David Goffin although it was the Belgian ace who claimed the spoils 6-3 6-3 to keep the contest alive.
There followed a 'Fast4' mixed doubles match, with Kerber and Zverev beating Mertens and Goffin 4-2 4-3 (2) to take the points.
Kerber was delighted with the result and her performance as she looks to get back to the level that saw her win the Australian Open and Wimbledon two years ago.
"I think it was a good match from both of us, a really high quality," she said. "For me, it gives me a bit of confidence starting the year like this, playing good tennis again."
