Konta predicts Serena win

17th December 2017, 16:00 by Daniel McCarthy

British number one Johanna Konta is backing Serena Williams to retain her Australian Open crown.

Konta was easily dispatched by Williams at the quarter final stage of the tournament last year, losing 6-2 6-3 to the 23-time Grand Slam winner.

Serena then went on to beat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and her sister Venus to move above Steffi Graf’s record of Open era titles and only one behind all-time record holder Margaret Court.

This was despite being pregnant at the time and, even though she hasn’t played competitively since giving birth, Konta is expecting her to return next month and again be the player to beat.

"You don’t put anything past Serena," Konta said to the Metro. "If anyone can back so soon after giving birth, it’s probably going to be her.

"I think regardless of how many matches she’s had previously or how much tennis she’s played, she’s always Serena and the player or the athlete she is, she brings a lot of that to the table regardless."
