Kyrgios' rallying call ahead of Laver Cup

20th September 2019, 12:50 by Simon Barlow

Nick Kyrgios says rankings are overrated and that Team World should not be worried about facing Team Europe in the Laver Cup.

Team World are the underdogs again this year as five of Team Europe's six players rank inside the top 10 while Fabio Fognini is just outside it as the number 11 player in the world.

John Isner is the highest-ranked player for Team World at 20th while Jack Sock is as low as 210th ahead of Friday's matches in Geneva.

But Kyrgios isn't concerned in the slightest about that, saying: "I'm personally not scared of that team.

"I have beaten every single one of their members, and I know guys on my team have beaten them before, as well.

"I mean, yeah, on paper we're undermanned and we're an underdog, but I don't believe that – you know, I strongly believe that we can win.

"Like we have been so close the last few years.

"We have had match points to win the whole thing.

"John had match points against Federer. I had match points against Federer. We got super unlucky.

"Yeah, okay, on ranking – I think ranking is the most overrated thing ever.

"I strongly believe we are going to win."
