Muguruza beats injured Azarenka
Garbine Muguruza successfully defended her Monterrey Open title after Victoria Azarenka was forced to retire through injury.
The two-time Grand Slam champion had not won a title since winning in Mexico 12 months ago and was happy with the way she played throughout the week to defend her crown.
"I'm very happy with this week," the 25-year-old said. "It's a great feeling to come back and defend a title - it's never easy."
Azarenka, who was playing her first singles final in three years, required a medical timeout after losing the first set 6-1.
Strapping was applied to her right calf and although she tried to carry on, the 29-year-old was struggling and withdrew when trailing 3-1 in the second set.
