Number one not the focus for Wozniacki

13th January 2018, 15:01 by Neil Foster

Caroline Wozniacki is fully focused on her tennis despite the prospect of returning to the top of the WTA world rankings.

The 27-year-old found herself ranked number one in the world as long ago as 2010 but a dip in form saw her fall from the summit in the next few years as Serena Williams dominated the women's game once again.

The Danish star improved during 2017 and victory in the end-of-season WTA Finals in Singapore saw her climb to number three in the standings.

She has yet to win a Grand Slam title and will begin her preparations for the Australian Open by playing in Auckland's ASB Classic, with a first-round match against Madison Brengle on the horizon.

Should Wozniacki win the tournament she could return to world number one, depending on the results of Simona Halep at the Shenzhen Open and Garbine Muguruza at the Brisbane International and, while excited by that prospect, she will just let things take care of themselves.

"That'd be awesome, amazing, but I've been there before, it's something I've done - it's not something I feel like I really have to achieve," she said.

"I'm just enjoying that I've been playing well and honestly, right now, I think my main focus is just trying to get in that match rhythm, it's always difficult."
