Osaka sets sights on top spot

12th December 2019, 15:47 by Gareth Freeman

Naomi Osaka says Ashleigh Barty deserves to top the rankings but hopes to replace the Australian as world number one.

Osaka moved to the top of the WTA rankings after winning the Australian Open at the start of 2019 but ended the season in third spot.

Barty won the French Open and then claimed the season-ending WTA Tour Finals crown to ensure she finished at the top of the pile.

Osaka admits Barty deserves to be considered the best player in the world going into the new season although the 22-year-old Japanese star is confident she can return to the summit.

"I'd love to be number one again but I think Ash deserves the spot right now," she said, as reported by NewsChain.
