Watson crashes out of Aussie Open
Heather Watson is out of the 2020 Australian Open after the Brit suffered a heavy defeat to Belgium's 16th seed Elise Mertens.
Harriet Dart is the last British player left standing in the singles Down Under after Watson was beaten 6-3 6-0 in just 56 minutes in her second round encounter with Mertens on Thursday.
Having produced a strong display in tough conditions to beat Czech Kristyna Pliskova in the first round, the 27-year-old Watson was unable to replicate that performance against an impressive Mertens.
Watson struggled with her serve as Mertens managed to win the final eight games of the match to see her through to the third round of the first Grand Slam event of the year.
The 24-year-old Belgian, looking to match her run back in 2018 when she managed to reach the semi-finals, faces American youngster Catherine Bellis in the last 32.
