Williams faces Bouzkova semi after Osaka scalp
Serena Williams beat Naomi Osaka for the first time on Friday and will face Marie Bouzkova in the Rogers Cup semi-finals.
Williams, 37, had lost her two previous encounters with the 21-year-old Japanese ace and had not faced her since their controversial 2018 meeting in the US Open final.
On that occasion, Williams was penalised a game for arguing with the umpire, with Osaka's eventual victory overshadowed by the American's petulant behaviour.
However, that was all forgotten as the Florida resident secured a 6-3 6-4 triumph in Toronto to set up a last-four encounter with the 21-year-old Czech Republic qualifier.
It was a high-quality match between players at different ends of their careers and Williams confessed she had learnt a bit about her opponent from previous losses.
"I just wanted to come out and try to win a set this time - she's beaten me twice. I just wanted to do the best I could today," she said after the match.
"I knew her game a little bit more, so that's a little easier, and, you know, I'm just overall a little bit better."
Young US star Sofia Kenin plays rising Canadian starlet Bianca Andreescu in the other semi-final on Saturday.
