Wimbledon decision imminent

26th March 2020, 14:47 by Michael Holland

The All England Club have called an emergency meeting, when a decision will be made on whether Wimbledon goes ahead as planned.

The only grand slam tournament to be played on grass, is scheduled to take place from June 29 to July 12, but there is a very good chance it will be postponed, or maybe cancelled altogether because of the coronavirus.

There has been talk of moving the tournament to later in the year, but because of the grass surface, that may not be practical.

The cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics has also opened up a window of opportunity, but it remains to be seen whether another three weeks would make much of a difference.

All the options will no doubt be discussed at the meeting before the decision is made and then announced.

"The unprecedented challenge presented by the Covid-19 crisis continues to affect our way of life in ways that we could not have imagined, and our thoughts are with all those affected in the UK and around the world," Chief executive Richard Lewis said.

"The single most important consideration is one of public health, and we are determined to act responsibly through the decisions we make.

"We are working hard to bring certainty to our plans for 2020 and have convened an emergency meeting of the main board for next week, at which a decision will be made."
