Foakes and Jennings return for England

11th February 2020, 14:16 by James Mason

Keaton Jennings and Ben Foakes have both been recalled to England's 16-man squad for next month's tour of Sri Lanka.

Neither player has featured for England in a Test since the 2019 West Indies tour, but they have been handed another opportunity to impress in the two-Test series in Sri Lanka, which starts on March 19 in Galle.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Foakes has been included in place of Jonny Bairstow, who has been rested by the selectors, and the Surrey star will be battling it out with Jos Buttler for the gloves

As for opener Jennings, he is expected to play in one of the two Tests as England continue to search for a solid opening partnership, having gone with Dominic Sibley and Zak Crawley for the recent series against South Africa.

Leading wicket-taker James Anderson has not been included in the touring party as he recovers from a cracked rib suffered in the 3-1 series against the Proteas, while Moeen Ali continues to make himself unavailable for selection in the longest format of the game.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer had already been ruled out because of a low-grade stress fracture in his right elbow, which has also stopped him from playing at the 2020 IPL, but fellow quick Mark Wood will make the trip.

Left-arm spinner Jack Leach has returned to the squad after he was forced to return to England from the tour of South Africa in January because of illness.

England Test squad: Joe Root (Yorkshire) captain, Dominic Bess (Somerset), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Sam Curran (Surrey), Joe Denly (Kent), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Keaton Jennings (Lancashire), Jack Leach (Somerset), Matthew Parkinson (Lancashire), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Dominic Sibley (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham) vice-captain, Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).
