Fancourt performance pleases Bezuidenhout

13th February 2020, 17:20 by Dan McCarthy

Christiaan Bezuidenhout admits he was very pleased with his bogey-free first round as he leads the Dimension Data Pro-Am.

The tournament, part of the South African Sunshine Tour and co-sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour, is being held at the Fancourt Golf Estate.

Bezuidenhout leads by two strokes ahead of Spaniard Santiago Tarrio Ben, with former Open and US Open winner Ernie Els tied for third with Portuguese contender Stephen Ferreira.

The world number 60 was in inspired form through the day to hit a round of 61 on the Outeniqua Course which is the lowest of his career so far.

A very positive start saw him go four-under-par after just five holes and speaking afterwards, the 25-year-old was in a buoyant mood following his display.

"I got off to a good start today with birdies on the first couple of holes," he said.

"It was crucial to get off to a good start because, over the years, the Outeniqua has been the scoreable course so I'm obviously very happy with my 61 today. I was especially happy with my start – I was four under par after five holes, so that also helps."
