McIlroy confirmed for BMW PGA Championship

30th July 2019, 10:37 by Tom McGarry

Rory McIlroy is the latest big name to be confirmed for September's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The Northern Irishman is a former winner of the Rolex Series event, triumphing back in 2014, while he finished runner-up to Francesco Molinari last year.

Molinari, as well as Englishmen Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, are some of the other stars confirmed for the event, which has been moved to September from its usual May slot on the European Tour schedule.

The event will also be the first that counts towards qualifying for Padraig Harrington's 2020 European Ryder Cup team and McIlroy is hoping to make a strong start.

"The BMW PGA Championship is always a great event and I'm looking forward to playing in it again, particularly in its new September date," McIlroy told the European Tour website.

"I've won at Wentworth before and finished second behind Frankie last year, so hopefully I can do well again and also get off to a good start in the Ryder Cup qualification."

Further big names are expected to be added to the field over the coming weeks, with the tournament set to take place from September 19-22.
