McIlroy storms into Memphis lead

28th July 2019, 09:28 by Tom McGarry

Rory McIlroy holds a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis.

The Northern Irishman appears to have put his disappointment of failing to make the cut as last week's Open Championship firmly behind him, as he signed for a score of 62 that has moved him onto 12-under-par for the tournament - one stroke clear of nearest rival Brooks Koepka.

McIlroy set the tone for his round with birdies at two of his opening three holes before a 25-foot putt at the seventh began a run of three consecutive gains.

A dropped shot at the par-four 12th threatened to derail the 30-year-old's hard work, but he picked up four shots at his final five holes to put himself in prime position to win his third tournament of 2019.

The four-time major winner certainly feels his game is in good shape heading into Sunday's final round.

"I had a lot of good numbers where I could go ahead and make a full committed swing, and I just dialled my distances in with the wedges," he said. "One of my goals was to hit it pin high and I hit it pin high most of the day.

"These greens are so pure if you get it on line and get it rolling properly, and I've holed a lot of putts this week."

World number one Koepka was at his consistent best as he carded a round of 64 to move onto 11-under and set up heavyweight final pairing on Sunday.

Overnight leader Matthew Fitzpatrick is also still in contention, as he recovered from dropping four shots across as many holes by finishing with back-to-back birdies to move onto 10-under, one shot ahead of Marc Leishman, Alex Noren and Jon Rahm, who are also well placed heading into the final round.
