Palace teenager attracting European interest

12th September 2019, 18:41 by Bobbie Jackson

Crystal Palace could be set to lose a bright young talent as Valencia and Benfica are keen to snap up teenager Jadan Raymond.

The midfielder has impressed in Palace’s academy over the past few years and his exploits, both domestic and international, could be set to seal him a move overseas.

Raymond is being monitored by Valencia and Benfica after catching the eye with England’s Under-17s at the Syrenka Cup in Poland this week.

Indeed, the 15-year-old played a huge role in helping England’s youth side to glory, scoring the decisive penalty to seal victory over hosts Poland in the final.

Palace feel the youngster has bags of potential and are keen to sign him to professional terms, but that isn’t currently possible due to his age.

He is in the final year of his academy contract and Palace are understood to be making efforts to try and extend the deal.

In the meantime, he could elect to move away from the Premier League club if he is offered a lucrative deal overseas – and reports claim that could be on the cards.

It’s understood that a fee as little as £250,000 would be deemed enough to snatch him away from Selhurst Park although it isn’t clear if Raymond is tempted by the opportunity to test himself abroad.

Plenty of English youngsters have elected to do just that over the past few years, but the likes of Jadon Sancho, Ademola Lookman and Reiss Nelson had already tasted senior football in England beforehand.

The Eagles have earned a reputation for developing players over the past decade, with Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka coming through the ranks.

Undoubtedly, Palace will do everything in their power to convince Raymond that they can offer him the best route to first-team football over the next few years.
