Townsend prepared for Liverpool onslaught

19th November 2019, 10:28 by Gareth Freeman

Andros Townsend accepts Crystal Palace will have to defend in numbers against Liverpool but is convinced they can get a result.

The Eagles host the league leaders on Saturday as they bid to become just the second team in the Premier League to take any points from Liverpool this season.

The visitors have 11 wins from 12 games so far, with the only blemish on their record a 1-1 draw at Manchester United a month ago.

Palace are winless in four as they come towards the end of a tough run of games. The south London outfit have lost to Manchester City, Chelsea and Leicester but did manage a draw at Arsenal.

Townsend is well aware he will have plenty of defensive duties on Saturday and expects Liverpool to dominate possession.

However, the forward is convinced that if his side stick to their game plan, and make the most of any opportunities that do come their way, they can put a dint in the Reds’ title charge.

The 28-year-old told The Season So Far that Palace will approach the visit of Liverpool differently and he will “have to defend for 90 minutes, even as a winger”, but he says Palace remain optimistic they can get something out of the game.

He said: “If you defend well and take your chances at the other side, you can definitely pull off a shock, as we’ve proven many times before, and I think that’s kind of the mindset going into the game.”

Townsend says the Eagles need to be “clinical” to “pull off a big shock” although he believes all the pressure is on Jurgen Klopp’s pacesetters given they are the heavy favourites to claim all three points.

Palace go into the game in 12th spot in the Premier League table, seven points clear of the bottom three but just two adrift of Sheffield United in fifth spot.
