Goals the focus for Jesus

12th December 2019, 08:40 by Alex Jack

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus says he is delighted to be on a goalscoring run after bagging a hat-trick against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian forward has been forced to step up to the plate in the absence of injured team-mate Sergio Aguero and the youngster has done just that.

Five goals in five starts for the 22-year-old has seen Jesus’ stock rise and his impressive performance in a 4-1 win at Zagreb was another example of his progress under manager Pep Guardiola.

Having played second-fiddle to Aguero for much of his time at City, Jesus is delighted to be on a run of scoring goals.

“Now the goals are coming so I’m so happy but I cannot stop – I have to keep scoring,” Jesus said. “I have to do my job. My job is to score goals and help the team, without the ball and with the ball. Last month, I was not scoring and I felt so bad because I have to score and help my team-mates.”

With City already secured of a place in the last 16 of the competition, Jesus added it was special to bag himself a second hat-trick in the Champions League.

He added: “When I was young, I’d think about the Champions League – I wanted to play, I wanted to score, I wanted the ball. For me it’s a very special moment when I score goals and a hat-trick as well.”

City, who will find out who they face in the last 16 in the draw on Monday, must now look to get their Premier League season back on track after a difficult spell.

The reining English champions are well off the pace in the title race, with 14 points between themselves and frontrunners Liverpool ahead of City’s trip to Arsenal on Sunday.
