Magpies target Deepdale ace

22nd July 2019, 03:54 by Michael Holland

Preston North End defender Ben Davies is said to be a target for Newcastle boss Steve Bruce as he lines up his first signing.

Bruce has just taken over from Rafael Benitez at St James' Park and will be looking to bring in one or two targets before the summer transfer window closes.

Reports in the tabloid newspapers over the weekend suggested the Toon boss is ready to make his first signing, and have claimed it could be North End ace Davies.

Bruce was in charge of Preston's Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday last season and would have seen close up the performances of Davies, who stood out in the North End side.

The 23-year-old benefited from a loan spell with Fleetwood Town the season before, and after making 40 appearances for Preston, could be ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

Bruce wants a new central defender and it would appear that Davies is high on his list of targets and a bid could be imminent.
