Vertonghen eager to prolong good run

4th December 2019, 15:24 by Dan McCarthy

Defender Jan Vertonghen says Tottenham are keen to extend their fine form under Jose Mourinho against Manchester United.

Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino last month and Spurs have won all three games under his stewardship.

He began with a 3-2 win away at West Ham United before kicking off his home Tottenham career with a 4-2 Champions League triumph over Greek outfit Olympiakos – having come back from 2-0 down.

On Saturday, they defeated Bournemouth 3-2 in a result that has seen them jump up to sixth in the table.

It was a bold appointment by Daniel Levy but the Portuguese appears to be working his magic early on but his toughest assignment yet comes on Wednesday evening in the form of his old club, United.

The 56-year-old won the League Cup and Europa League during his two-and-a-half-year stint at Old Trafford but was never truly deemed a success in Manchester, with the Red Devils rarely looking like challenging for the Premier League.

Mourinho left acrimoniously following a 3-1 loss away at Liverpool last December and, ahead of the latest meeting between the two sides, he will be hoping Tottenham can get a similar result to the one they got at Old Trafford last season.

Under Pochettino, Spurs defeated United 3-0 with two goals from Lucas Moura and one from Harry Kane settling the match.

Ahead of the game, centre-back Vertonghen says he hopes his side will take heed from last season’s match and has urged them to continue their good run.

“Last season, the win at Old Trafford was big for us,” he said. “We always enjoy the games there because it’s two teams who want to win and who have to win. It’s a tough place to go but also a nice place to go with results like that.”

“We’re going there to win, not to sit and wait. We just want to go to Old Trafford and keep the good run going and keep climbing towards the top four.”
