Saints coach sets sights on title defence

24th January 2020, 18:55 by Gareth Freeman

New coach Kristian Woolf hopes his St Helens side can defend their Grand Final title ahead of the new Super League season.

Woolf has replaced Justin Holbrook as head coach as the Australian opted to take charge of NRL club Gold Coast Titans after guiding Saints to victory at Old Trafford last term.

Saints open the new campaign against Salford Red Devils, the side they beat in the Grand Final, next Friday and Woolf feels his side will only go down as one of the greatest teams in Super League history if they can back up their success with another title win this year.

"I think real success is longevity and that's what we need to aim at, to make sure that last year wasn't just a one-off and that we're right at the top of the competition again this year," Woolf told the St Helens Star.

"We're going to be judged on a number of years rather than just one."
