Hansen delivers positive prognosis on Retallick

28th July 2019, 10:41 by Tom McGarry

New Zealand coach Steve Hansen has confirmed lock Brodie Retallick has dislocated his shoulder but he should return for the World Cup.

The former World Player of the Year sustained the injury in the 61st minute of the All Blacks 16-16 draw with South Africa in the Rugby Championship on Saturday after being cleared out of a ruck by opposite number RG Snyman.

Retallick was in visible pain as he left the field in Wellington, but Hansen has now revealed that he expects the 28-year-old to be fit for the World Cup, although he did not give an exact timeframe for his recovery.

"We have a reasonably positive update," Hansen revealed on Sunday. "He's only dislocated it which means that there's a good possibility he could make the World Cup.

"There's no timeline yet about when he's going to return to play. He's one of our best players so I'm obviously relieved."

New Zealand's opening match of the World Cup will be against South Africa in Yokohama on September 21, while the two-time defending champions will also take on Canada, Namibia and Italy in Pool B.
