Hepher encouraged by pre-season work

25th July 2019, 17:52 by Tom Hill

Exeter Chiefs coach Ali Hepher admits he has been encouraged by his side in pre-season as they try to win a second Premiership crown.

The south-coast club reached the final for the fourth year running last season but were once again beaten by Saracens.

Exeter have now lost three finals to Sarries, with their only title coming in 2016 as they beat Wasps in extra-time.

The Chiefs are well into their pre-season schedule and Hepher is preparing his team for the opening game of the season against Bath on September 21.

Hepher's men face a busy month at the start of the campaign but the Englishman is pleased with the early signs.

He told Exeter's official website: "It's great to have the boys back in. They all look in great nick, which shows they've put in some hard work in the off season, and already we've seen some good scores in terms of their testing. That's great for the future and it shows we have a bit of bite about us and a bit of fight to knock on from last season.

"I was excited to get back into this season. Having reviewed it all, you could see the quality was there from our part. Also, a critical mass of the squad are still relatively young and in their mid-20s, so we feel we have a lot of growth in this group, which we are all very excited about."
