Nowell set for ankle surgery review

29th July 2019, 15:20 by Craig Smithson

Jack Nowell left England's training camp in Italy for a "surgical review of his ankle", the Rugby Football Union have confirmed.

The 26-year-old back linked up with Eddie Jones' squad in Treviso despite continuing his rehabilitation from the ankle operation he underwent last month after suffering the injury during Exeter's Gallagher Premiership final defeat by Saracens.

No date was given for Nowell's return, but he is expected to be fit for the World Cup, which gets underway in Japan in September.

Jones has plenty of options in the back positions, but he is keen on having Nowell in his final 31-man squad, which is due to be named on August 12, given that the British and Irish Lion has won 33 caps since making his Red Rose bow in 2014.

In the meantime, the RFU released a short statement to confirm the reason behind him leaving the training camp early this week.

It read: "Jack Nowell has returned home for a routine surgical review of his ankle."
