Wasps man Shields in World Cup fitness fight

30th July 2019, 18:54 by Aidan Perkins

England flanker Brad Shields is facing six weeks out of action with a foot injury, risking his availability for the World Cup.

The Wasps forward was forced to return from last week's training camp in Italy with the problem and he may not be able to play again until mid September.

England's first World Cup game is against Tonga on September 22 so he is facing a race to prove he will be ready for the tournament in Japan.

"Brad has got a tear in the lower foot," assistant coach John Mitchell said.

"It's always a little bit niggly - and it's four to six weeks for him - but we will continue to appraise his recovery and see where he gets to."

Head coach Eddie Jones will likely keep an eye on Shields' progress over the next fortnight before naming his 31-man squad for the World Cup on August 12.
